Deer Hunting for Beginners: The Art of Not Being Detected

A deer’s number one defense is its sense of smell. It can pick-up a human scent from everything that you do both before and during your bow hunting trip. Here are a few tips to help remain undetected by the deer.

1. Use a hunting soap for your laundry detergent. This should be a non-UV hunting detergent that will eliminate both the scent and the glow that clothing can give off.

2. Before you go hunting, be sure to shower in a good hunting soap. This will help neutralize your scent.

3. Make sure that all of the soaps and detergents that you use are scent free. After all, it won’t do you any good to wash your clothes and take a shower if you are doing it with a scented soap. You may have eliminated the human scent that you carry, but the deer will know that your Irish Spring scent isn’t natural to the woods where the deer is roaming.

4. Eliminate eating spicy foods. Some people avoid eating garlic, peppers and other spicy foods for the entire hunting season. While this may be excessive, you definitely want to eliminate these items in the days leading up to your bow hunting trip. Garlic in particular can escape through your pores and the deer will pick-up the scent from a mile away. You will want to pay close attention to any food that you bring with you on your hunt as well. Try to eat foods that are natural to the deer’s diet and environment. Good options would include apples, peanut butter, nuts, etc. You definitely don’t want to bring a roast beef or bologna sandwich with you. The deer will smell the beef and run in the opposite direction.

The art of staying undetected from the deer is just that…an art. The tips above should get you off to a good start on your next hunting trip and when combined with other good camouflage strategies, should help get you within range of your target.
